Seaside escapes

Seaside escapes

“Look at that sea, girls – all silver and shadow and vision of things not seen. We couldn't enjoy its loveliness any more if we had millions of dollars and ropes of diamonds.” Lucy Maud Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables

In her timeless novel, Montgomery captures the essence of the sea, something that continues to evoke emotions and has inspired countless poems and novels. This past weekend, amidst the final touches of our building project, we decided to escape to Brighton Beach. Despite the forecast of rain and wind, we knew the seaside would offer a serene space to recharge our batteries. Turns out, we were exactly right. There's such a beautiful thing about the water and its ability to calm and rejuvenate the spirit.

During the trip, my partner gave me a choice: water, mountains or trees. Well, how could I not pick the ocean as it was staring back at me in all its glory. Brighton Beach is really cool, actually. We stayed at the Grand Brighton which is rich in history, including being bombed in the '80s, an attempted assassination of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. We spent ages looking out into the ocean. The derelict West Pier, a Grade 1 listed pier that sits in ruins was really captivating. Our days were filled with leisurely walks along the shore, explorations of quaint shops, a beautiful dinner overlooking the pier and encounters with whimsical amusements like the upside-down house. It was the perfect escape.

There's an old adage that says "wherever you go, there you are." I believe this is true as you can't escape your problems. But if you happen to need a getaway to escape the rumble of the city or some certain noise, it can help to go somewhere by the sea. There’s a magic to the sea that rejuvenates and nourishes the soul in ways nothing else can. Its beauty truly is priceless.
