Making mistakes
“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re Doing Something." ~Neil Gaiman
I have a confession: I hate making mistakes. To be fair, I don't know anyone who enjoys them. I strive for perfection, aiming to navigate life's challenges flawlessly. But life is anything but predictable. It's messy and it's often filled with unexpected twists and turns. And amidst the chaos, I've come to realize that my failures have been my greatest teachers.
Take, for example, my recent attempt at passing the driving test in the UK. Despite studying pretty hard for it and spending a pretty penny on driving lessons to boot, I stumbled. I nearly missed a turn on the roundabout and made a driver behind me slow down as I attempted to exit and that was enough to secure a major fault. It was a stark contrast to obtaining my American driving license, where success came easily.
But, I've come to see this setback as a catalyst for growth. It's a signal to study harder, practice more diligently, and become truly confident on the roads. While I'm disappointed not to have secured my UK license yet, I'm determined to turn this stumble into a stepping stone towards success.
As the saying goes, "victory is sweetest when you've known defeat." I believe that my eventual triumph will be all the more fulfilling because of the initial challenges. So here's to making mistakes in the year ahead and learning from them. Let's embrace the journey, flaws and all, and see where the road leads us.
